History
The original 14km Spa circuit used public roads between Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot from 1921. The first motorcycle race took place in 1921, the first car race in 1922. In 1924, one year after Le Mans, the first 24-hour race for cars was held here.
From 1950, the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix was held annually at Spa. After several fatal accidents in the 1960s, driver protests grew against the ultra-fast and unsafe circuit — in 1969 F1 left for the first time.
In 1979, the redesigned, shortened modern circuit of 7km opened. Since 1983, Formula 1 has been back and Spa remains one of the most beloved and demanding circuits on the calendar.
Today the circuit is considered by many drivers and fans to be the greatest racing circuit in the world. Every lap here is a privilege.
