The Build Process

Choosing a base car

Before the build of a race car can begin, a base road car has to be chosen. It is important that the car is straight — so it has not been in any serious accidents — and rust-free. If you wish, TrackTime can source and collect the car for you.

Stripping the car

The first step is gutting the interior. Seats, door panels and sound deadening all have to come out. We remove everything that is not needed so we do not carry any excess weight on track. In some cases we strip not only the interior but disassemble every component until only the bodyshell remains — for instance for a full respray or to seam-weld the car for extra stiffness.

Fitting the roll cage

Once the car is stripped, the roll cage can be fitted. This can be either a welded or a bolt-in cage. A welded cage has the advantage of making the car stiffer. If it needs to be a bolt-in cage, we usually use a Wiechers roll cage.

Chassis reinforcement

On some models, such as the E36 and E46, it is necessary to reinforce the chassis at the subframe mounting points on the weak spots. This prevents the chassis from cracking under heavy track use.

Respraying the car

Once the major chassis work is done, the car can be resprayed. White is often used as the base colour — white has the advantage that you quickly notice any cracks appearing later on.

Fitting all the race parts

Once the car has been sprayed, we can start installing and fitting all the race parts. From race brakes and limited-slip differentials to race suspension and engine tuning — anything is possible.
